TEMPLATES

The IDEA:
An experimental art project conducted in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City in Oct. 09. The experiment dealt with issues of viewer engagement and alternative approaches to the idea of an exhibition and acquiring art.

22 objects were created, which were called "Templates". People were approached and asked for their opinion about a "Template", and their opinions were recorded in writing and on video. They were offered the "Template" to take for free.

There were 3 Creative Engineers conducting the experiment and 1 videographer. The results were varied and intriguing. To view the process click on the videos to the right.

The OBJECTS:
The "Templates" themselves serve as kinds of creative sight lines for exploring how humans understand and represent ideas and form.

Related Concepts:

Reticle:
A network of fine lines, dots, cross hairs, or wires in the focal plane of an optical instrument's eyepiece - commonly used as precision pointers.

Points, Lines and Planes:
Specific visual elements (points, lines and planes) organized differently activate unique cognitive processes. They are used as indicators in conceptual representations such as architectural diagrams, musical notation, letters of the alphabet, mathematical equations and more.

Each of the following are made up of the same fundamental visual elements - points, lines and planes organized differently - each achieves dramatically diffferent cognitive responses:

musical notation - sound
architectural plan - space
engineering diagram - structure
letters of words on a page - narrative

PATTERN LIBRARY
When: June 20-21, 2009

The IDEA:
Pattern Libraries are used to catalogue common design patterns used in designing websites and software.

The "Patterns" in this project will be wire structures in clear containers. The "Pattern Librarians" will oversee the pattern selecting process. Once patterns have been chosen from the catalog they will be brought to the research area where the viewer can spend time with them, explore various combinations and record their impressions of the "Patterns".

The LOCATION:
The Waterpod in South Street Seaport NY, NY
