Concept for "Templates" Project:
These objects are designed as creative optical patterns (reticles) for exploring form and perception.

What is a Reticle?:
A reticle is a network of fine lines, dots, cross hairs, or wires in the focal plane of the eyepiece of an optical instrument commonly used as precision pointers

Points, Lines and Planes:
Specific visual elements (points, lines and planes) organized differently activate unique cognitive processes.

Note:
Points, lines and planes are used as indicators in conceptual representations such as architectural diagrams, musical notation, letters of the alphabet, mathematical equations and more.

Implications:
"Templates" bring together the concepts of optical patterns and unique approches to the visual elements of points, lines and planes.

As a result they serve as kinds of creative sight lines for exploring how humans understand and represent ideas and form.

Additional Notes:
Each of the following are made up of the same fundamental visual elements - points, lines and planes organized differently - each achieves dramatically diffferent cognitive responses:

musical notation - sound
architectural plan - space
engineering diagram - structure
letters of words on a page - narrative

Background:

10.17.08:
"Templates" distributed in NY, NY (Chelsea) from 1-5pm. People approached and presented with the objects. They are asked to express their opinions about the object and their reactions are recorded.
